About
Abid Hussain

Originally from Karachi, I am based in Islamabad, covering politics, foreign policy, security, human rights, disinformation, the economy, media freedom, and culture across Pakistan, Afghanistan and the wider region.

Before joining Al Jazeera, I spent six years reporting for the BBC in Pakistan and worked at Herald, the now-closed Karachi-based investigative monthly.

I have reported on a number of important stories, including an investigation into Pakistan's internet firewall in November 2024, cited by Freedom House and the United Nations. I won the Human Rights Press Award (multimedia) from Human Rights Watch for my longform account of Pakistani migrants aboard the trawler Adriana, which sank in the Mediterranean in June 2023. I also won the data journalism award from the Centre for Excellence in Journalism for my COVID-19 pandemic coverage for the BBC in 2021.
